Pick it up a bit, widja?

What is your favorite/worst pet peeve when it comes to other drivers?
And, naturally, it's all the other drivers who are at fault. I -- and anyone reading this -- are perfect drivers. The late comedian George Carlin said there were two kinds of drivers: The Maniac, those who are going faster than you; and the Idiots, those who are going slower than you.
It's really a crap-shoot out there on the roads. And, frankly, I'm amazed there aren't more accidents. I think the only thing that limits accidents is that we must all be somewhat careful because it's too expensive to have body work done on today's cars. And none of us can afford for our insurance to skyrocket.
And sometimes the too-careful driver is the worst kind.

So my pet peeve is this guy, the too-careful driver: The driver who comes to almost a complete stop on a busy driveway before turning into a business's driveway.
A business's driveway is almost always ample-sized. It has to be. But some drivers approach it like the driveway is covered with nails. And if you happened to rear-end this driver who was sloooowing down to turn, guess who gets the ticket?
You do.

Rest in peace at rest areas

The simpler days of motoring weren't necessarily better. People still drove fast, but there was less traffic. Cars weren't as safe, but, well, there was less traffic. Think of how rest stops, for instance, were originally designed. The sites were meant to be as bucolic as possible. The rest areas were set back in the woods. Peaceful. A place to rest your weary eyes. There's a fairly new rest area on I-69 between Lapeer and Imlay City that's absolutely beautiful. You drive up a hill from the freeway and the parking area is set back in the woods. I wish I could live there. But now there's a movement to make the rest areas more visible. I stopped at a rest area on I-94, west of  Kalamazoo, that was simply a flat parking lot laid out right next to the freeway. People were still resting, I guess, but it wasn't bucolic by any stretch of the imagination. I slept for a couple hours early in the morning and, I have to admit, I felt safer being out in the open..

Avoid Van Dyke like the plague

Get out the violins for small-businessmen (and small-businesswomen) who are located on Van Dyke near I-696.
Van Dyke -- all lanes in both directions -- will close for six days starting today (Thursday).
The extremely busy road, just north of Interstate 696 in Warren, will close so Consumers Energy can replace a gas line under the road, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Consumers Energy plans to remove sections of pavement across all lanes.
The closure is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Thursday and end at 5 a.m. Sept. 18. Detours will be posted.
Small businesses will feel the pain and listen for complaints coming from workers at the GM Tech Center -- many of whom live in Oakland County. This is a good time to take advantage of one of Macomb's most underrated roads: Mound, which is basically a divided highway with a few stop lights thrown in.

Hope you like to commute

Sachse Construction is the latest suburban company to announce a move to downtown Detroit.
I think it’s wonderful when businesses move to Detroit. In the urban utopia that exists inside my head, most businesses would locate in the city center, surrounded by a housing belt, which in turn is surrounded by a gigantic greenbelt. If you want to throw in a Bible belt, go ahead.
But every time a suburban company moves downtown my first reaction is: How do those employees feel? Chances are most of those companies’ employees live in the suburbs and now must commute downtown. The price of gas and lack of mass transit makes the trip a bit undesirable. Yes, a SMART bus is technically a form of mass transit, but it’s the lowest, stickiest form.
Sachse does contract work for Quicken Loans, which has paved the way for companies setting up shop downtown. CompuServe is another one. A really huge company like the Ford Motor Co. has kept its headquarters out in Dearborn. But the Ford family did move one of their smaller businesses back downtown -- the lowly Detroit Lions.
