Goodbye fees

I know our beloved state needs all the money it can get so I'm surprised that lawmakers are eliminating some traffic-crime fees that could take up to $20 million from state coffers.

The Senate voted 37-0 to eliminate some fees associated with Michigan's "driver responsibility" program, according to an Associated Press story. The bill has already passed the House and will be sent on to Gov. Rick Snyder.
The fees in question applied to traffic crimes that already required paying fines. The extra fees would end for offenses including driving with an expired license, and driving without insurance or proof of insurance.
It will cost the state money, but it's the right thing to do. Do be ticketed for not having proof of insurance -- when you've already paid the state's high rates of auto insurance -- is bad enough. But an additional fee is ridiculous. This fees came about because no politician dared say they were raising taxes. So they had to raise fees.
